A dental implant is an artificial root placed in the jaw to support a fixed or removable restoration that replaces a missing tooth. Suitability depends on bone and gum conditions, general health, medicines, oral hygiene and the planned restoration. An implant is not the only option and is not the most suitable choice for every patient.

When may implants be considered?

Implant-supported restorations may be considered when one, several or all teeth are missing. The number of implants does not always need to match the number of missing teeth. Position and number depend on the prosthetic design, jawbone, bite and neighboring teeth. Alternatives may include a conventional bridge or a removable denture.

What happens during the assessment?

A dentist examines the mouth and may request X-rays or three-dimensional imaging to assess bone volume and anatomy. Gum health, remaining teeth, the bite and the ability to clean the planned restoration are considered. Medical conditions, medicines and smoking or nicotine use may affect planning. Gum disease or decay may need to be addressed before implant treatment.

What are the treatment stages?

After planning, the implant is placed in the jaw using an appropriate surgical approach. Placement is commonly performed with local anesthesia; the method depends on the individual and the scope of surgery. A healing period may be needed for integration with the bone. The timing and design of the restoration depend on bone conditions, initial implant stability, any additional surgery and clinical assessment. A temporary restoration may be considered in some cases; immediate placement of a replacement tooth should not be assumed for everyone.

What if there is not enough bone?

Jawbone volume and anatomy can affect the treatment plan. For some patients, procedures such as bone grafting or sinus floor elevation may be considered before or alongside implant placement. These procedures are not required for everyone; the need is assessed after examination and imaging.

Healing and possible risks

Temporary pain, tenderness, swelling or bruising may occur after surgery. Risks and healing time vary with the procedure and the person's health. Infection or inflammatory problems around the implant may occur; ongoing care and follow-up matter. Follow the written instructions provided by your dentist. Contact the clinic about increasing pain or swelling, fever, discharge or bleeding that does not stop. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency care.

Long-term implant care

The implant and its restoration need daily cleaning and regular professional reviews. Brush twice daily and use interdental aids suited to the shape of the restoration. Keep the follow-up schedule recommended by your dentist. Arrange an assessment if you notice bleeding, swelling or tenderness around the implant, or loosening of the restoration.
